“This project is the first collaboration between Eric Stotts Architect and Omar Gandhi Architect and set out to expand the traditional domain of the architect into new, untapped terrain - the Industrial Park. This new terrain is defined in its very resistance to definition in the traditional Architectural sense - and by its hidden promise.
We accepted the challenge to insert a new architectural type - or “species” - into this light industrial “ecotone”. In ecological terms, an “ecotone” is defined by the Oxford English Dictionary as:
“a region of transition between two biological communities”.
The word was coined from a combination of “eco” (logy) plus “-tone”, from the Greek “tonos” or tension - in other words, a place where ecologies are in tension. Taking some liberties with the original Greek and Latin etymologies, we have coined the the “architone” to describe this project’s site - an “in-between” which occupies the edge between City and [Industrial] Park.
One hope for this project was that it would give rise to new forms and result in novel opportunities for habitation, occupation and engagement with the surrounding landscape. To create something truly special - and altogether unexpected and delightful.” - Eric Stotts
